4200 yard shot on 36-inch plate
« on: March 30, 2016, 12:31:39 pm »

Looks like T posted a thread last year about the same group hitting a 3800-yard shot.  Apparently they've now stretched that record out another 400 yards.  :woot

He did that in 17 shots?  Jesus.  That's impressive indeed.

I find myself wondering how at how many shots a hit becomes statistical luck rather than precision and skill.  I mean if you shoot at it long enough you'll probably get a hit eventually.   :hmm

We'd have to know the distribution around the target to determine if they did it by chance or not.  There is a stat test involved.  But only 17 implies some degree of non-random chance.

Yeah, I would have liked to see him hit it again.   Kind of odd they quit after one hit.   I'd wanna keep going to know it's not a fluke.

im not impressed at all honestly. hes having someone else call his wind and his shots basically. it really wouldnt be that difficult with the right caliber and elevation mount. what makes it hard is having the money to pay for the equipment to do it.

Isn't what this guy is doing similar to what military sniper teams do?  Granted it's certainly not the same since a military sniper usually has a spotter and a bunch of bad guys trying to find and eliminate him.  This shooter, on the other hand, has someone monitoring the wind, two guys spotting remotely, and a guy consolidating all of the provided information to provide the shooter his dope.

    yes and no.
    depends on the mission
one shot and your hide becomes a defensive position. you cant just keep shooting. granted im no snipper/ddm but most of the time that spotter is doin much much more then just spotting.

radio for approval, watch your 6, check for collateral, whose watching? the dope is the easy part.
