Saturday, April 21st - AZGO Shooting Meet
« on: April 13, 2012, 01:07:09 PM »
So let's do this thing.

Next Saturday, the 21st, we'll be out in Maricopa for a little shooting and a meet and greet.   :thumbup

Google map here -->  http://g.co/maps/jv9qg

GPS -->  33.01022, -112.156411

We should be at or near the location of the green arrow in the map above.  However, if it's crowded at that spot, we could be about 100 yards south of the arrow on the other side of the wash.

I'll be out there by 9am at the latest.  You can identify me by my truck, a blue Chevy Silverado 4-door...

I'll also have a blue shade tarp set up over the tailgate.

Come out and see us.  I have a couple of steel targets I plan to set up.  One for handgunning and another out past 100 yards for rifles (no AP ammo please).  After the shoot, around 2pm I expect, we'll head off for some lunch at the local Native New Yorker.   :thumbup

I know it'll be at least me, Harm, and Jesse.  Anyone else coming, let us know and we'll look out for you.  You can PM me for my phone number if you like.

I'm not sure if I'm going or not yet, but, according to the Wilderness products website, Native New Yorker is posted no guns.  http://www.thewilderness.com/storepinnacle/index.php?p=page&page_id=CCW_Unfriendly_AZ_Dining_Guide

Have you guys been out to the federal land down where the 347 and the 8 meet? I've been out there a few times and it's just dead quiet every time.

I'll be there.  I'm putting the V slip in tonight.  :thumbsup

:facepalm  I put in for this week-end back in January and the vacation slots are all filled for next week-end.   If somebody cancels by Tuesday I'll grab it but otherwise I'll be working instead of shooting.

Yes.  They are posted.

Unfortunately, it's the only decent place nearby.  Going someplace else would be 30 to 45+ minutes out.

We could do lunch in Ahwatukee or close to there I suppose. Anyone have any ideas?

...

On another front, I've been getting questions concerning this area being closed as per the Pinal County Sheriff's Office.  Here's the skinny...

We have been hassled by the PCSO at this location before.  The first time it ever happened they told us the area was closed and ran us out.  Follow-up research showed it was in fact not closed, and they had lied in order to get us gone.

The second time it happened they didn't run us off (and in fact said they couldn't ask us to leave), but instead gave a lengthy lecture to everyone out there about complaints from someone on the other side of the mountain.  Our group had been packing up anyway, and so left.  But a few other groups kept shooting after the lecture.

This is BLM land, I am 1000% sure (confirmed with GPS coords via live GIS data).  According to the BLM, this area IS NOT closed.  We are absolutely allowed to shoot out there, I assure everyone.

However... we may get yet another visit from the PCSO.  Whether they tell us to leave or give the lecture, I couldn't guess.  My expectation is that we get the lecture, as that was the most recent course of action by the PCSO.  And besides, the very last time we were out there there was no hassle at all.

I'm not expecting any real problem.

...

IN THAT VEIN... I will be bringing some black garbage bags so we can spend a quick 10 minutes cleaning up after we shoot.  This has long been a standard operating procedure with myself, Harm and Jesse.  I hope everyone will join us in making sure our shooting location is better than we left it, thereby ensuring that this area does continue to remain open.  :)

Any chance that you'll get together for a shoot like this in the west valley, like maybe out at Flat Iron? I'd like to go, but we're talking a long drive from where I live. Both  Flat Iron and Table Mesa are about a 50 mile drive one way for me, while Maricopa has got to be twice that.

We'll definitely be doing something like that, as well as hosting something up here in Prescott (especially as the weather warms up).

Jesse and I will be leaving from my house in the west valley at about 8am.  I have room for two more if you (or anyone else) want to carpool.

Of course you'd be at the mercy of our schedule.  We'll be the first in and last out, so it'll likely be an all day joint for anyone riding in my rig.

Thanks, I appreciate the offer. The early in is not a problem, just that I couldn't make a day of it and so it just wouldn't work out for me this time. I'm still open for another time though, and definitely would show up for one closer to home.

Adults only or can I bring my 8 year old son. He loves to shoot (who wouldn't?)

Thanks!

ABSOLUTELY!  Bring the whole family!

Of course you are responsible to make sure he shoots and handles guns safely, but I expect that that's a non-issue.  :)

Don't ever assume :) Bet yes he is good and I will be next to him if we can make it. Can the roads be driven with a car? I don't have a truck.

Damn it!  I'm going to miss the shoot.  >:(

I had a tooth killing me for a couple of days now so I got worked into the dentist.  Turns out I need a root canal but before he can do it the infection has to come down so he couldn't do today.  So now I'm going to taking pain killers and antibiotics until I can get the tooth done next week.  Since I'm going to be on vicodin I don't think I'm going to be driving over there and try shooting.

I've been waiting to go shooting since I found out about the AZGO meet plus I was really hoping to meet you guys.
Hopefully, I'll make it to the next one you plan.

Sure.  It's a slightly bumpy road, but it's passable.  We've had folks out there before in Honda Civics and Mustangs without issue.  And it's only about 500 yards from the paved road, so we'll see you coming if you have an issue.  :)

Damn it!  I'm going to miss the shoot.  >:(

That sucks man.  We'll be out there is you change your mind.  Be safe.

That sounds great for you guys "up there".  We need to try something like that for the Tucson guys.

This area (Maricopa) is about as far south as we've been, but we'll be planning these all over.  So Tucson is absolutely a possibility.

Didn't see much turnout (myself, Thernlund, Harm, Coyotesfan97 and his son, and a couple other friends), but we had a great time! We had some informal competition, lots of guns to try out, and good company. Can't ask for much more.

It looks like we'll be doing the next range day in Prescott mid-May. I'll get a thread up in the next few days. Hope to see some of you there!

I wish I could have made it too, but I'm hoping you have one a bit closer to the West Valley.

BTW, what kind of targets do you shoot when you go out? Is it all paper, or do you bring hard targets, plastic bottles, cans or what?
