Swords are cheap and easy to work. If I screw up, I'm not out a whole lot. Firearms... Ehhh... I'd LIKE to, but I have no idea how to sqeeze what is in reality an experimental piece into my budget, let alone have somebody volunteer their piece

Y'know what's fun and cheap to practice on and cheap to boot? Glass. I buy the Harbor Freight diamond saws -Those little 3/4inch discs that snap on a 1/8 mandrel.. Go to the Dollar Store or Walmart and pick up some shot glasses and those long bud vases. Try using the side of the diamoond disc for script lettering, works a treat.
I have a plethora of carving burrs. I've worked amber, malachite, and hardwoods with varying degrees of success. I still carve a gourd or make a small jewelry gift or two, but my eyesight's bout as bad as my hearing..
