XD vs. Glock
« on: March 10, 2012, 08:55:00 PM »
I think I know the way this will play out...but am curious anyway and I always learn something new about my favorite topic (guns) via the aggressive collegiality, and I'm not trying to pick any fights, but here goes:   For those of you who have experience with both makers which do you like best and why - Springfield XD or Glock?

I think my username rats me out and the reason is that for some reason I shoot it better than any other handgun, the ergonomics really work well for me.  I like my Glock and shoot it fine, but I LOVE my XD and it feels like an extention of my body.

Let me first pre-qualify my answer by saying that I've owned both and I'm not a huge fan of either.

The Glock I can hit with very well, but it tends to be uncomfortable to me for some reason I cannot completely discern.   Understand that this isn't the old 'grip angle' argument, which I think is BS.  If you're a shooter it shouldn't matter.  I am, and I can shoot it fine.  It just hurts my hand.

The XD is nice and comfy to shoot, and just like the Glock, I can hit with it very well.  But I think it's ugly.  I look at it and for whatever reason I think of a streamlined Hi-Point.  Bleh.   :-\

That said, if I'm forced to choose and these are my only choices, I have to say XD based on it being more comfortable.

T and I have the same problem with the Glock.  I can make it work but the XD is a better fit for me.  I currently run the first generation XD 4" service model in .45 ACP and 5"  Tactical model in 9mm, also first generation.

Have not had the opportunity to shoot the XD, but do enjoy my Glocks more than I thought I would.

Glocks work. I shot a match with a Glock 22 in 40. It doesn't really fit me very well, so it never made me want one. THe XD fits me a little better, but not good anough to make me want to buy one. I have a M&P that I did a trigger job on and gave to me wife. It fits me worse than a Glock, but I can hit whatever I want with it. Any on them are fine pistols and just pick the one that fits best.

I have a first gen 17 and an xd9, I shoot both well, not my favorites, but can hit what I aim at, I like the m&p more, but over all, I"m a metal gun guy, usually a 1911 platform or reasonable clone, or as some say a "wannabe".
I learned early on, to enable ones self to be able to shoot well with any platform, as it may be necessary to utilize another weapon, so expand your capabilities by shooting and trying as many shooters as possible.
Breakage is and could be an issue on a long term shooter, "uncle Murphy" is in play at all time, when you least expect it, or plan on it, he arrives and then its chaos.

I've owned several of each and a fan of neither, but if I had to make a choice it would be an XD, hands down. The Tupperware in my house is used to store leftovers. It's steel for me, stainless preferred by far, as for alloy's, meh.
Pssst....I don't care for AR's much either.  :pfft

I currently own one of each of these in 9mm and also have a M&P subcompact. I am also comfy with the xd grip . i hear the gen 4  backstrap on the glock has improved its feel in the "fat handle" category :thumbsup to glock for improvements. But the M&P is a peppy lil subcompact it has a lot of upper kickback but i have been plinking 1000s of rounds through all of my guns. I think my next one will be the comp 5.25 xdm..   :drool
Anyone here have a gen 4? hows the improvement of the grip....
Did i mention the hi cap mags for these and drums for the glock are sweet .....
 :thumbsup

I own both and really like them both.  It's all up to the user.  If it's comfort then it would be the XD but for reliability and the least parts the GLOCK is superior by far.  I have friends that have upwards to 90,000 (yes that's ninty thousand) round through their Glocks and still going.  Besides maybe recoil springs.  Glock is my "END OF THE WORLD" gun.

Having owned both and other autoloaders, I carry a Glock every day. The grip angle is good for me, and while it's not the most comfortable gun, it works, always has, always will and if something does go wrong, I can field strip it in seconds and detail strip it and have it back together within a couple minutes. With minor modification it's extremely accurate and can shoot full of sand, under water and it stands up to just about any abuse I can put it through. Simplicity and fewer moving parts means there is less that can go wrong when I really don't want it to.

I'll pick Glock for the vast availability of aftermarket parts and very inexpensive stock replacement parts.

Although it wasn't the first polymer frame pistol, the Glock revolutionized the industry.

I actually prefer HK over Sig Sauer....... ;)

I agree J&J when comparing Hk's and Sigs.   Lot's of Sig fans on this board, but I prefer a Glock over Sig all day long.

I own both Glocks and Xd's and seem to go back and forth about which one I like better - hence the reason for starting this thread.  On my last trip to the range I took the Glock 23 out and was shooting it very well...making me reconsider my next purchase (probably this weekend at the show), it will be interesting to see what I come home with.

Gun brand loyalty seems to run pretty deep and I'm fascinated by where that loyalty comes from.  I've heard guys rave about crappier gun brands because it was what their first gun was (and they could only afford the cheap one at the time) and they swear by it.  Others seem to go the other way and the higher the price tag the better it is.  Others believe everything they read.  Ultimately,  I just dig guns and like anything prefer some more than others.  Oh, and LIzard they're all REAL guns if they go bang!

^^^ Truest statement here.

I like all guns, just some more than others.   :thumbup

Both the XD and the Glock are excellent quality firearms.  Any comparison between the two will only come down to personal preference because there's really nothing left of major consequence to debate I think.  ;)

I'd grab for a Glock over most other brands. They're simple, reliable and they just keep shooting. They may look a little ugly, but that's ok because to me they're just a tool NOT a fashion statement. I own several polymer frame pistols and I'm not proud to admit this but I've dropped one loaded on many occasions and never had a A.D.  :thumbup

I've never been an XD fan personally because of the requirement for the grip safety to be disengaged before being able to manipulate the slide.  I know it's a finicky reason, but during firearms training back up in Washington we would be required to do the "awkward" manipulations, and doing stuff like one handed reloads, and shooting along the ground from a side position are considerably more difficult.

Never shot one of them, so this is PURELY based on very limited, specific training scenarios, but that's the reason I have 3 Glocks and no XDs.

I have to go XD. Both are great firearms, but I shoot better with the XD naturally. I can do just as good with a glock as an XD, but I have to concentrate or I tend to shoot high.

That's a hard decision. I've had 2 XD .45's and I have my Glock 32, and both are fine shooters. They're both pretty much equal in IMO but I lean more towards German/Austrian engineering. That is a very personal choice between the two. In fact I wouldn't mind owning an XD/M in a .357 sig or another .45.

When I was shopping for my first handgun I tried out both and ended up purchasing an XD45 Service.  I've got nothing against Glock from a quality standpoint, but the blocky grip combined with the way my middle finger would always rub under the trigger guard turned me off.  I realized I'd have to completely alter my natural grip to shoot it comfortably, so it was a no-go.  I shot and carried the XD trouble-free for several years until I sold it to help get my 7,62x39 Saiga running, and now I find myself curiously attracted to all things CZ.  A PO1 will probably be my next handgun purchase.
