wanna make a tac shot gun
« on: August 09, 2013, 01:21:55 pm »
I have two Remington 1148 12ga. Shotguns. One is in sweet shape the other is fair. Would like to take the fair one and make a tactical shotgun with it wanna cut the barrel down to 18  so no SBS NFA. Just wanna make a cool tac gun out of it. Ideas any one?

Do not make me go to Wikipedia to find out what SBS NFA means.  Perhaps I could direct you to the RANDY WEAVER, how to home smith a shotgun with your federali drinking buddies, home study course.   :-) ;-D

Does it have a ventilated rib barrel or smooth one? I know a guy in mesa that can cut, crown, drill, tap and screw in a new bead for around $60. If you want to build this with the get er dun mentality, you can take a pipe cutter to it and finish it off with some fine grit sand paper and needle files. Then you can take some cheap cold blue to blend it to the right color. After that you could drill and tap it for the right thread size.

I wish they were 11-87s or 870s. There's a whole lot of things I can do with those.

I'm pretty sure since it's recoil operated and not gas, you can make or add a pistol grip to it.

I'd measure the threads on the magazine tube to see if you can tread on a magazine extension.

If you happen to live in Prescott then Hans Vang would be the right guy to talk about extending the forcing cone, back boring the chamber and porting the barrel.

I might encourage you to reconsider the 1148 - given the availability of spare parts and accessories.  My mom has an 1148 and ended up bending the Magazine spring that took a long while to replace.

Well I am just building it to play with and I do have some parts that came with the 2 1148's one is really nice so it will stay the way itis. The oothers one is going to be the tactical!

Because you are removing mass from the barrel, and if I recall correctly, an 1148 works like an old Browning Auto 5 in that it has a barrel that reciprocates backward with the action while being slowed by a friction ring and recoil springs, the spring tension and friction rings may have to be adjusted to suit the lower reciprocating mass. I am pretty sure the older Auto 5's had different sets of friction rings depending on load strengths (magnums vs target loads), but the 1148 may be able to self regulate better than the Auto 5, I don't know.

Just something to think about, any shotgun mechanics want to chime in?

I was thinking the same thing. I don't know if barrel weight changes how it cycles. Then again I've seen a 12'' NFA Remington model 11(A-5 copy) for sale not to mention the people who make ''whip it'' copies out of A-5s.

Will definitely check that out when I get it running! I already thought about the cycling. Will see how it turns out guys. Thank you for your input for sure. Got the barrel cut down today will get it cleaned up tomorrow. May go with a muzzle brake. Any ideas where I can get one that is permanently put on like silver spider or welded?
