PHX area gunsmithing school?
« on: February 21, 2012, 09:50:46 AM »
I've been thinking pretty hard about what I want to do with the rest of my life as I definitely don't want to do what I do now forever (answering phones).  Gunsmithing is something I'd be very interested in doing.  I know its not all fun and range time but I enjoy working with my hands and mechanical stuff.  Now to the question.

Are there any gunsmith schools in the Phoenix area that I could take at night?  Can't afford to go up to Yavapai as I have to keep food on the table.  Apprenticeships are also an option for nights and weekends.

I thought at one time Grand Canyon had a gunsmithing program.  Or maybe Gateway.  But I'm not sure.

(I know... I'm no help.)

I have done a little research on SDI. I'm thinking about taking the gunsmithing courses not only to open other job opportunities but so I can do my own guns as I have started my collection. I have dabbled a lil on my Llama with some light filing and polishing but would like to be able to do more to my larger calibers without fear of damaging them.
My wife carries a bigger gun than me!

I went through this search years ago. There really isn't a "institute of higher learning" for gunsmiths in Phoenix, but Prescott has a decent program, and isn't too bad of a daily commute.
