I'd pick the SIG P229.  None better in a 40 S&W pistol.  The P229 is reliable, very ergonomic and sturdy as all get out.  I'd get an older model SIG if possible.

In .40 there's really only one choice- Sig 229.  It is the premier gun in .40.  The Sig 226, S&W M&P are both awesome if you want Full Size or Polymer.

Not a colt fan boy by any stretch of the imagination, so I vote Sig. Very nice guns and about the same price as a colt.

Sigs in general are a more out-of-box kind-of gun. More so than a Colt slightly.
Sometimes 1911's require more work to get running well, but once you do they are extremely nice.

I have had only 6 1911s over the years and never had a problem but I suppose I was just lucky.

As much as I love Colt 1911's, I suspect that the Sig is likely a better modern weapon.  It's lighter and has a larger magazine capacity.  It also takes a bit of work to turn the Colt into a highly accurate match grade pistol... though I personally think it's worth it!!!  :yes

I'm gonna hate myself for saying this but I suspect the Sig is going to be a better choice...   :facepalm

Sig is a better out-of-the-box pistol fit-and-finish-wise.  Colt can be kind of rough aesthetically.

Both are equal in reliability I think.  If I HAD to pick a more reliable pistol, I'd pick Colt by the very thinnest of margins.  It's close enough though as to be pretty much academic.
