Non Standard Shoots
« on: April 05, 2014, 06:35:31 pm »
So I'm thinking about as the weather warms up for the summer the comfort of shooting on a Saturday morning anywhere south of the pines is unlikely to garner much enthusiasm.

But is there any interest in setting up a night shoot close to Phoenix?  Maybe a bit more casual & likely shorter than others.  But I enjoy the act of shooting.  Either with flashlights or by moonlight.  I think its a type of shooting most of us are unlikely to engage in.

Thoughts?

This would be a great idea...especially with weapon lights and flashlights

I like that idea...even if we did it as the sun was going down, it would still be cooler.

I think a bit of work setting up a night shoot could be fun.  If we only had 10 or so but were willing to setup, go one at a time we could even setup a little 2 gun low light stage.

You never have to twist my arm to hard to put lead down range. I'm in. I would like to talk about having one EXPERIENCED range safety officer on deck.

    That's a good idea.

Hmm... I'm having an idea for some kind of informal night competition.  :hmm

. If we shoot one at a time as I suggested & time each persons run as suggested yes.  Normally the RSO would be right on your 6 to keep you right.

This does sound interesting, especially if in my area (North Phoenix).

I know how to do it in Maricopa.  North Phoenix is going to require someone else be in charge :dodgingabullet ;-)

When I have done night shoots in the past. I always started at just before sunset to set up. Run it one or two times at dusk (low light) then did the night shoot. That way you know where it is safe to shoot. That no one is still setting up targets and if you need to reset any targets the RSO only sends a fixed number of people down range. Then counts them when they get back.

Night shoots are fun, but everyone needs to take extra precautions to be safe when the fun starts.

Ive done a night shoot before... we had build a mock house...bunch of false walls...

When we went in to reset targets or to change the course, we had 5 glow sticks, given to 5 people. person in charge would count out loud as the glow sticks returned and before the round started again.

We did a giant carabiner attached to the shooters pants and the RSO kept their hands on it.  Allowed them to control the shooter a bit outside of verbal commands.

I did this about a year ago with some friends while camping. We shot with the moonlight, weapon mounted lights and night vision. It was awesome. We were only shooting at wood stump and a white bucket at 30-50 yards. We did this for about 30 minutes. You couldn't exactly see how accurate you were unless the target moved. Steel would be more ideal.

Sounds like fun to me. Another option is we can probably find someone who has a cheap gen, and some lights if we wanted to.

So Harm, are you planning on doing this at out near Maricopa or at a formal range?

We can set some small cheap strobe lights on some steel targets down range to simulate mussel flash.
