Down and out in Clarkdale...
« on: July 01, 2012, 08:20:24 AM »
I'm down for the count, totally frustrated, and ashamed to admit that I give up...after several hours of research and trying to reinsert the bolt assembly of my 1916 Spanish Mauser, I'm reaching for the towel...

When I removed the bolt for cleaning from my newly acquired rifle, the safety tab was in the unlock/fire position ( horizontal )...after cleaning the bolt I found I was unable to reinsert the bolt into the receiver all the way...the tab was frozen in the fire position and I was unable to move it back to the safe position ( vertical ) which would allow me to fully insert the bolt...

Did anyone else have this problem or is aware of a solution..? Is there some kind of cambering that rotates the safety tab that I need to actuate ?...

Thanks for any help...Larry

Assuming that the bolt is assembled properly, did you cock it?  Some safeties don't work unless the firing pin is in the firing position.

I'm guessing all you need is to give the bolt shroud a hard twist clockwise against the bolt body in order to get the cocking piece cammed back and in line with where it should be in the receiver.

Try this:

Mauser bolt fix

I ran out to my workshop with the bolt in hand, stuck it on the vice, pulled down, and, viola!, I turned the safety to the off position...

I'm thinking about some poor guy in a combat situation facing this problem...I guess any solid edge that could grab the lip would work...I would think that when the bolt is removed with the tab in vertical up ( safe ) position it would stay in that position until reinserted ...seems strange that if an inadvertent bump pushing the tab to the vertical down ( fire ) position when the bolt is removed the weapon would be essentially inoperable...

I thank you, Sir...and my wife thanks you...she can now get me to mow the lawn...Larry

Spanish M93 Mauser Bolt Disassembly And Reassembly

Freeman...Excellent vid on the assembly/disassembly of the 1916 Mauser bolt...assuming you did not push the safety tab to the down vertical position after removing the bolt...My mistake was just that, and from that point I could do nothing with the bolt...the vid from AZCharlie addresses this problem directly...Now that I have corrected the problem I can proceed with the full disassembly/assembly of the bolt using the excellent vid you have provided...Thanks, Larry

I tried that earlier with no joy...the shroud turns until it reaches the stops then if more pressure is applied it rides over the stops and comes off the bolt body...then you have a real challenge getting it lined up and back on again...I read about this fix during my research...maybe it works for the 98's and the 8mm but it's no go for the 1916 ....Larry
