Shooters World?
« on: August 06, 2012, 06:26:35 PM »
I haven't been there since they first opened in the '80's.
Anyone here go there? Is it crowded? best times to go?
Thanks for any info.

If you mean the one on 28th Ave just south of Indian School, I was there a couple years ago and I don't think I'd go back.  It was kind of ghettoish in my opinion.

Their new one up on 91st and Cactus is pretty decent.  I was in there around 2pm on a weekend and there was a line waiting for range time.

It's been at least 5 years since I've been to the ShootersWorld on Indian School.  No plans or desire to go back!

I went around 1-ish on a Saturday.

I frequent the 28th Ave and Indian School location and find the staff helpful and the range clean. It's a static indoor range but quite serviceable. The Peoria location is fine as well.

Just a place to punch paper fits my needs for right now.
Are there any "tactical" indoor ranges? I havenyt been to Caswell or Scottsdale Gun Club, how do they stack up?

Never been to Caswell's.

The SGC is a very nice range, and they do allow holster shooting.  But only by members who qualify with an RO (essentially, making sure you're not a dumbass who's going to shoot your leg).  I'm not sure about non-members.  You could call and ask.

They don't allow movement though.

I  haven't been to Caswells in a long time either so hopefully someone who's shot there recently can chime in.  I had a membership then as I did a lot of shooting there.  No movement and I don't remember doing any holster work and IIRC they didn't allow it.  It's a good indoor range. At the time it supplemented the outdoor range I was using where I could move and shoot.

I also used to have a membership at Caswells...

They tend to be rather hit and miss with respect to customer service.  Sometimes you can walk in and get helped immediately.  Other times you'll wait till they get around to assisting you.  From what I recall they also don't tend to be consistent about ammo and targets.  Sometimes they will allow you to use your own ammo/targets and other times they will require you to purchase theirs.  I think, however, that this is more of an issue with individuals working there.

Oh and the one thing that really disturbed me about Caswells was the lack of ventilation.  It's been several years since I shot there but, at the time, the only ventilation on the range was a series of swamp coolers.  I have to hope that the Fed's have intervened and forced them to improve the ventilation in the last few years.  I do not, on the other hand, know if they have made any improvement to the range since my last visit.

Well, I shot for a couple hours at the Shooters World on 89th and Cactus today.
The range was okay. -Little heavy on the cordite funk, but the ventilation was fair. I went at 4:30 and the renge wasn't crowded, But the RO said weekends are always busy.
Took my .45< .32 and .22 rifle. Got hit with a lot of hot brass bouncing off the lane divider.. Is what it is.
15 buck an hour -air conditioning -worth it to me.
No Ghettoness observed  :)
Overall, decent place to put holes in paper. I'll be back soon.

I shoot at Caswells on a membership.  Excellent ventilation, sometimes you need a jacket as it gets too cold :).  I've never been told to buy their ammo when shooting my own guns.  Only require it when you use their rentals.  Require you buy their targets.  No holster shooting or movement.  I've never had a problem with customer service.

I find Mondays to be best at Shooters World on Cactus.   Scottsdale Gun Club is nicer and you can rent machine guns for a price.   The ventilation at Scottsdale is better by far as it seems to be hit or miss at Shooters World.   The staff at both places are good.

Like a lot of other comments. Shooters world is a good place for summer shooting when the temps are up. I look for specials on their range punch cards Shoot four hours the 5th is free. cost of the card was buy one get one free (45 dollars). That beats the 15 bucks an hour.
