ruger gp grip question

On the rubber grips with the wood insert insert like the attached photo ... does one grip have a threaded insert and a screw goes through one and binds to the other or do they get secured to the frame? I was thinking of just buying the rubber part without the wooden insert since I have so many nice pieces of wood here I could do my own thing with.

The left side has a threaded insert and the right side has a plain bushing. The screw doesn't contact the frame.
The rubber portion is held to the frame by a large metal dowel that passes through the grip frame.
