Ever see primer strikes like this?
« on: October 17, 2016, 11:58:40 am »
Sorting through some range brass.  Found a total of three like this.  Definitely not mine.

Primers look like they were hit so hard, I thought they were pierced.  Can't see any daylight coming through, so I guess not.

Figured I would just toss 'em.  The primers are indented so far, I'm afraid the decapping pin might get broken if I attempt to reload them.

Probably reloaded with soft primers.  Unless the case looks misshapen, cracked, has excess pressure signs, or is otherwise damaged in some way, I wouldn't worry about it.

How would deep primer strike pockets be over pressure loads?   :confused

Firing pin dent is way too big for a normal handgun.  Probably fired in something like a semi-auto Tommy gun.  The ones I have seen from a TG were not pierced but they were really big and messed up looking. Dirty/sooty cases imply a blowback carbine of some type at least that is what is indicated to me because the longer barrel really makes them come out sooty. My Marlin Camp 45 and my .45 ACP AR15 both do this to cases.

Intel hit it.  I've seen these before from my kids Thompson.  Even though its a FA with a much shorter barrel, it does punch the primers pretty good.

Have seen similar on 9mm from an open bolt Sten.

    Definitely not mine.

    Hmm.  Perhaps they were mine.

I DID shoot the Tommy Gun last week.

Although I only saw three cases that had those HUGE indentations, I did notice some others that had good, deep, solid strikes from a large pin.

Since it's pretty much been determined that those rounds were from my Tommy Gun, this raises another question:

How about SMALL primed .45's ?

I'm thinking maybe I should make sure I avoid using them in that weapon ?
