Title: Where has all the members gone?
Post by: 5632 on October 15, 2021, 04:24:06 pm
Only 2 people posted yesterday and one today by 4:20pm.  I know there a couple of members that are very annoying but are they driving everyone away?  What is happening with this Forum?

It ebbs and flows.  Seems like someone asks that question every year about this time.  Basically the weather has gotten nice and there's a ton of stuff to do.  People are getting away from the keyboard and doing stuff.

This exactly.. there is a lot of events going on right now in Arizona..
That mixed with the weather being absolutely tucking beautiful, people are actually enjoying the outdoors.
I know that all the long offroad trails have been packed lately with the cool down.
Hiking has picked up..
Wives are making their husbands decorate the outside with fall shit..

It’s normal… just like your complaining about the forums every couple weeks

Personally, i think a big part of it is the format. Just not mobile friendly. For whatever reasons... doesn't matter.  It just isnt.
The other forum i am on most of the time has several AZ folks that are/were on this forum.  They post all the time.

I'm a recent member...haven't moved to AZ but will next year.  I stop by the Forum daily to see if there's any discussions going on that I find interesting.  I'll be in AZ for a week soon and plan on hitting the gun sho in Wickenburg just to see how AZ gunshots are.  They gotta be better than here in Marylandstan.

I am also still on Calguns. +/- 1,000 new threads/replies every day. Granted, I only look at 2-3% of them.
I'm on another firearm forum that has maybe 10 posts a week.
Quality vs quantity.

An easy assumption to make would be that many of the people who participate on this forum have lives outside of this forum.  :-P

Probably many reasons why, the weather is nice, people traveling / out on vacation, life gets busy, etc. I check in about every day to see what's going on and to see what's new.  :thumbup

That right there...
Facebook cornered the market on "groups" and basically rendered a lot of forums obsolete.  Who wants to manage servers and software and all of that when FB does it for free.  Plus it is very mobile friendly.

This is the second time you've created a thread about others not creating threads or posting. Have you thought about creating threads about shooting related topics that you find interesting?

That's sorta how these things work man.

Only thing we slowed down was the rhetoric of the political posts.
This is a gun forum, not a political one.

While I do understand that politics and guns do coexist…. A lot of what was being posted and brought up.. was not needed in a gun forum..
Personal attacks aren’t allowed either 😉

I'm on the Colt Forum and a couple of car forums...no politics, religion or personal attacks are allowed.  Violating those rules will get you the ban hammer for a week or more.  Members are usually very polite subject-wise and personally.  It works.  I'm also on the Maryland Shooters Forum...extremely active and pretty much the Wild West...just about anything goes...and there's enough knuckleheads that abuse it and keyboard commandos that know everything and try to impress everyone with that.  There's also enough thoughtful and knowledgeable people there to keep things interesting.

I'm new here and would prefer to see it remain polite and interesting.

I used to be a member on one of the 1911 forums. Their rules were so strict that I once got temporarily banned for responding to new member introductions in the freakin new member forum.

Sadly there are a lot of gun forums that are infinitely more strict in their interpretation of the rules than we are. Personally, if I really wanted to wade knee deep into the political quagmire I'd create myself an account on Fakebook and Twatter. I kind of like the fact that the preferred focus here is on guns rather than on the idiots and ideologues that run this country.

Everything is sounding like this forum needs to be updated and redone. One of the best designed, administrated and moderated that I have seen is the "TJ Wrangler Forum" done by Chris.

So kind of you to ask where I went this weekend! I was out camping in the desert, doing off-roading and shooting type things. Enjoying the amazing weather. I shot my Henry 45-70 lever for the first time and absolutely LOVE it! Also shot my AR pistol chambered in 7.62x39 for the first time. Love it too. A buddy of mine was surprised that it was louder than my 45-70, but I wasn't, I knew it would be louder. Funny story about that AR pistol... it is brand new and I forgot to put any sort of sights on it. So my point of aim depended on the previous dust cloud from where the bullet  hit the dirt. LOL

I personally would like more  threads about "what did you shoot this weekend and how did it go" rather than just what did you buy.

Are you volunteering to spearhead this rather significant task?

I've been involved in forum software upgrades in the past.  It's a SIGNIFICANT effort on somebodies part given that these forums are essentially big databases with a "user friendly" front end.

So maybe exCA wanting to join AZGO should be denied automatically.

Or perhaps we discuss the finer wines of the two Arizona Wine Growing Regions.
Most people don't realize that Arizona has a northern and southern wine growing region.  The northern is near Cottonwood and Sedona.  The southern runs clear from Tucson to Bisbee.
The latest edition of the Arizona Wine Guide (https://arizonawineguide.com/) highlights over 100 vineyards and wineries that prosper across Arizona.  Our unique climate allows them to grow a hearty mix of traditional grapes like Merlot and Pinot Noir, and some much rarer grapes like Tenat and Petite Verdot that were typically grown in small batches back in the old world to flavor wines.  Due to our unique soil here, they can be grown in large batches and even stand on their own rather than as a flavoring to add brilliance to another wine or blend.

If you get a chance, I highly recommend visiting Sonoita or Elgin and booking an Air B&B or Bed and Breakfast somewhere.  They have wine tours that will take you to all of the wineries where you can taste the wines and possibly purchase them.  It's a great weekend get-away to help the missus forget about the $2500 Ed Brown Customized 1911 Long Slide with engraved sides you just bought.

and there is a local wine site one can peruse to enjoy the nuances of the grape, i do favor the northern varietal of grape juice, but after a few reviews of recent additions to the southern grape  juice variety, they have come far from their long time ago first offerings.
Any grape juice one can swallow is good grape juice, but far from the whiney complaints about something that is free

Agreed.  For quite some time it seemed the best stuff came from the Verde Valley around Page Springs but the folks down south have made up a lot of ground in the last twenty years.  That big storm a few years back hurt them but vineyards are pretty resilient given proper care.  I always manage to stop in somewhere down that way when visiting relatives there.

If it's wine  time for you, it's beer time for me. So let's tell lies. Or in this case, a truth you will think is a lie. About three decades ago I went shooting with a group of friends. Just plinking in the mountains. One friend was always putting other  people down, like he knew it all and was better than everyone. At one point we saw an aluminum can way up a canyon, so far you could barely tell it was a can. He grabs his S&W 44  Mag and says "I bet nobody here can hit that can with my 44." I had only shot a 44 Mag a few times at that point in my life but I accepted the challenge anyway. I told him not only will I hit that can on the first shot but  I will do it shooting one handed. Of course everyone called BS but I took the shot and YEP, hit that darn can first try, one handed. Was it luck? Absolutely. But... you miss 100% of the shots you don't take. And there WAS a little bit of skill involved. Was funny to see his astonished reaction. Wish I had bet  him money. LOL

Well let’s try something simple, see if anybody’s jockey shorts get tied in a knot or not.

I was out with a couple other members here, SHOOTING today.  We shot steel, we shot paper, we tried some new shiny stuff, we tried some experimental stuff, some worked some didn’t.  Nobody got hurt, nothing broke, we had a great time.

We also discussed some serious shit, so here it is for the Fudds who bitch about being called a fudd, and for everybody else that’s a member.

We are losing our 2A rights.  The threat is much more real with Biden and democrats in Washington.

Women are a major group of new gun owners but we don’t have a good way to keep them interested or get them more interested than, “bought a gun for self-defense”.
Young folks are being taught guns are ONLY for hunting, if you don’t hunt you or anybody else has no need for a gun.  Many are interested but their only exposure is tainted by the false world of video games.

I do what I can but have no great ideas for fixing the problem.  If you have ideas to get young shooters involved and women interested in shooting as a sport, one of the guys I was out with is an excellent trainer, many years ago I was a trainer, and the other member has been an avid collector, reloader, and shooter for many years.  I’m certain we can help.

How about we get members and lurkers to save our trigger time rather than eat up keyboard time.

Ideas?

I’ve been throwing around the idea of doing a group shoot like we used to in the past.. we are long over due for one. It’s just timing for me to have that available to set up.

I think it would be good for all the assholes to come out from behind the keyboard and meet all the other assholes.. then we can be a group of assholes..

No current fire restriction, only issue for something impromptu is personal availability.  Weather is great.....   Good time to do something.

Nothing monetary, but something sponsored or promoted by a shooting forum, would separate keyboard commandos from real gun folks.

BTW, If it happens, I hope nobody takes this to mean you have to show up in a Marine Scout load-out.  Just bring what ya shoot, enjoy, share, learn, and get involved.  Bring the new women and young gun owners.

Personally I wish the price of ammo was lower than it is. I've got a bit of ammo in storage but not nearly enough for if the SHTF.  I tend to go through a shitload of ammo when I go shooting.  And right now I'm in something of a predicament. My employers just announced one of them vaccine mandates. And I'm old enough and stubborn enough to refuse to give them my vaccination information for no reason other than the fact that it's HIPAA protected and none of their DAMN business.  The problem is finding another job at my age, even in a STEM field, ain't gonna be easy.

Have I mentioned that I laugh every time I hear somebody tell me that AGEISM isn't a thing?

I’d be up for a group shoot, it’s been quite a while.

One of the few benefits of getting old, I think I’ve got a lifetime supply of certain calibers.

I only post here when I’ve got something to say, mostly I just read.

Last formal gun range I was at was C2 Tactical in Tempe.  I was there with one veteran shooter and a complete newbie.  We were treated well by the staff and getting the veteran and the newbie set up with a membership couldn't have been easier.  They now have a place to shoot that doesn't require an hour of travel time to get to and from the actual shooting site.   To your point, the newbie was a young lady who seemed to develop the beginnings of a working relationship with a CZ compact.   A very good outing to my way of thinking.

Group shoots have become more difficult these days but they remain a good way to get acquainted with the group you interact with here at the forum.   We used to have a gallery of photos from previous events so if its still accessible wander over there and give it a look.  We are still scattered all over the state and that situation hasn't improved so picking a site is sometimes an exercise in tolerance but we've always had some good times and grins whenever we made it happen.

Giving new shooters ( and the few old bitchy fudds who still survive ) a handle on all things related to guns and shooting has never been easier.  To get to the heart of the second amendment, gun culture and how its being discussed today I recommend the following site:   https://opensourcedefense.org

They have a weekly e-mail newsletter and I have yet to see any content there specifically related to hunting.  It gathers a lot of relevant news together and gives a pretty unique perspective IMO.  I like it and hope you all do as well.   :coffee

Good newsletter but, how about this local firearms forum generates some local support and interest.  Perhaps an administrator, moderator, Sr. contributor can try to set a date for an outdoor shoot and get some of the new folks to join in, learn, and have some fun.

Make the purpose to assist newbies and women, the fastest-growing gun-owning population that needs help, to enjoy shooting as a sport.

The forums and newsletters are nice and the keyboard is cute but it doesn’t go bang, doesn’t punch holes in paper or ring steel, and you don’t get the sweet smell of nitrates in the morning.

Anyone can say “Hey!! I’m going shooting, if anyone wants to join.. it’s here”

I mean.. that’s what the offroad community does.. kinda goes hand in hand

It doesn't have to be, I just figured people whop organized, established, and run a shooting forum would be good candidates to put their heads together, perhaps suggest a date and location, maybe send out a member email, and see what the interest is.  Some folks don't check in here often so an email is a capability you have that "anyone" doesn't

There doesn't seem to be a lot of interest in AZCDL, maybe there will be some interest in shooting.

I’m down for whatever.
My stockpile has diminished over the years but I need to get back out there and shoot!
It’s unfortunately been a while

Well, with the number of folks who jumped in here to say, "yeah I'd be interested in a group shoot", I would say, don't waste your time.

With that and the show of overwhelming support of AZCDL from members, I certainly won't waste my time trying to put an outing together here.

If someone would like to maybe plan a shoot I would suggest putting a limited number of registered people on the list in order to keep it as simple as possible for the planer.  No one needs to be pressured.

Wow, an email seeing who is interested or an attempt to get someone to do something similar to get a group shoot together or see he response, on a shooting forum is seen as pressure.  If this were a knitting circle I could see your point, but maybe????

I've thrown in the towel.

I got screwed once by Cram-Ram, If I agreed to do anything with him, that would be on me.  He is the one guy here I would never shoot with.  Couldn't trust him on a deal wouldn't trust him with a weapon. .

In all honesty you sound like you've been screwed once by a lot of people and no we don't want the details.   :coffee   On the other hand, my experience with c-r-r has been exemplary.  Merchandise as advertised, reasonably priced and meetings kept on time and efficient for all concerned.  Range sessions have always been safe, friendly and educational.

Some folks' attitude is like a set of scope lens covers - sometimes they forget and leave them in place when they should've put them the range bag.  YMMV.   :beer

Well then I'll tell you what, you go shoot with him.  This deal was almost 2 years ago.  I don't bash people easily on shooting forums, so I said nothing and simply didn't participate in anything he posted,
 BUTT.

There are about 4 million ways to say "I'm back", he chose a snotty ass remark in a thread that already demonstrated there are more keyboard warriors here than actual shooters.  Because of his grand entry, with no contribution to the thread, I finally decided to say something.

As for your insight: Your scope lens may be dirty, your eyesight may even be bad but don't judge mine when you know nothing about the transaction, so frankly, you don't know what the hell you're talking about.

I'm happy to drop it with what I've already posted, which I fully stand behind, and go on for the next several years ignoring him as I've done in the past.

I think you have handled yourself well. Thank you for that.
I’ll tell you this though. CRR is a decent guy in person and a well versed shooter.
When I first got into this forum when it was actually shooters .. I thought the same thing as you.
Then I met him. Fucking teddy bear. When I was having difficulties with shot placement with a new LR rifle. He helped me zero it in, no questions asked and didn’t make me feel any lesser.

He was the first person I hit up when I was going to build out a LR and again.. no hesitation, quick to help.

I would say, if you two can take this to PM and touch butts there and hash this out.. you two might actually get along.

And this last comment isn’t towards you but to everyone that has been using keyboard commandos here lately..
We all pretty much are lately.. we all need to get over ourselves and actually take the time to learn something from someone else instead of just shooting everything down and judge… me included

I'll agree wholeheartedly with what LL says.

There have been times when CRR's persona online has gotten under my skin. While I don't always agree with him online, he is a better and more disciplined shooter than me and most everyone I've ever gone shooting with.  He knows his stuff.  I've seen him consistently ringing steel at distances where I can hardly see the target. Hell, even his kids are damned well trained shooters.

Can he be abrasive online?  Absolutely, but there is almost always solid logic behind his comments.  Sometime you just gotta take a step back to figure out where he's coming from. Only thing I think he's wrong about are those damned utilitarian BLOCK pistols.  :rotfl :rotfl

Great to have all the character witnesses and I will concede all of your personal experiences but I have said what happened almost 2 years ago, I'm very clear on it, will not change my mind on the situation, and things will go back to the way they have been for two years, when he was here and when he was gone during that period.

I don't stalk, I don't challenge people out of vindictiveness, and a rarely say anything bad about people on forums, unless they have significantly earned it.

You can easily check all my posts and may notice the only dismay I have shown is lack of support for AZCDL and lack of interest in even offering a group shoot to see the interest level and then do it.

I will make this easy.  I'm a simple guy with simple interests, one of many being firearms, for many years.  My current interests are:

300 whisper, experience barrel length, accuracy, ballistics, suppressors, loads, experience

ARs in 45ACP, has anyone got one to run reliably, barrel length, bolt weight, buffer weight, and what buffer spring

Are any of the new AR calibers worth investing in

What experience have you had with what type of suppressors on what firearms POA shift, sound suppression.

Playing with MAC11s in 22lr, getting them running reliably.

Confrontation on the Internet is STUPID.  I'm looking to learn things from people with real experience, not confront keyboard commandos.

I don't need anymore character witnesses.  Go ahead and just kill this thread.  As I said, my rant dies here unless the demon is awakened by others.

Actually, the thread was going fine before you chimed in and may well continue after you decide you have better things to do.  For someone who says, " Confrontation on the internet is STUPID." you sure seem to instigate a lot of it.  If those are your words heed your own advice.  If not then kindly include quotation marks and an attribution to the wise soul who said it.   :coffee

WTF, you have a real problem with reading comprehension.  Let me rewind to page one of this thread, long before I posted anything:

This is the second time you've created a thread about others not creating threads or posting. Have you thought about creating threads about shooting related topics that you find interesting?

That's sorta how these things work man.

I stopped posting as I find this forum too micromanaged and concerned with "tone" and safe spaces. I'll just lurk for the marketplace.

Everything is sounding like this forum needs to be updated and redone. One of the best designed, administrated and moderated that I have seen is the "TJ Wrangler Forum" done by Chris.

I nominate our esteemed colleague, 5632, for the position of moderator in charge of forum upgrades and user interface standards.  Do I hear a second?   :coffee

After all the “this is the way we did it on CalGuns” and somewhere else crap this was my first post with the following graphic as a joke.  You will find it near the bottom of the second page of posts.  Not had to scroll back and look.

Well somebody asked where all the members are.  Apparently drunk on their asses.

If the Karens here are incapable of taking ribbing or can’t remember what they read, then they shouldn’t be handling deadly weapons.  If you want to kiss C-R-C‘s ass, as it appears with the crap you started, have at it, but don’t attempt to do it at my expense bow down and kiss it on your own dime.

Perhaps you should suck up your coffee and just drop it like I tried before you had to accuse me of not knowing what I was talking about.  I let the dead fish lie for two years.  Fish smell, so I will avoid further contact.

Seems odd that you, of all here, should  broach the subject of reading comprehension.  Is the giant, red text a sign that "the demon" has been awakened?    :popcorn
