If you have the money, I would look at Burris 5x25x50 II scope. Good for 1,000 yards and out to a mile. :thumbup

9 mils on the reticle and 10.5 on the turrets. thats plenty of elevation to get to 1k. also since its a second focal plane scope its set to MIL or be true at highest magnification

Now, I'm going to zero it at 100 yards when I get to the range.  Any comments or suggestions about a 200 yard zero?  Supposedly it was bored sighted at the factory at either 50 or 100 yards.....

100 yard zero is perfect. there really no benefit to a zero at any other range

OK, I am going to zero it at 100.  I will be using various Nato 150 grain FMJ ammo that I have in stock.  Now, my reticle has 8 large lines on the bottom portion with smaller lines in-between.  What line do I hold on for a 500 yard shot for instance???

Each large line is 3.6 inches, correct?  So, 3.5 lines is about 12.6 inches in elevation?   :hmm

Yes but try to think in MILs not inches.
Nobody is gonna tell you to hold 20 inches at 1000 yards

OK.  After zeroing my scope at 100 yards would I go to the next full line and hold for a 200 yard shot?

Do you have an iPhone? The best thing to do is download a ballistic app. Put as much info in as you can. It'll give you decent corrdctions in MILs.

Try a Lucid OPtics 6-24X50.. this is a MOA scope so no need to learn Mils... MOAs are more accurate measurement as instead of 3.6 inches at 100 yards it is 1 inch at 100yards. Which makes going out to 1000 a lot more accurate as at 1000 yards a MIL is 36 inches and a MOA will be 10 inches. I have one and I can shoot 1000 yards with a 100 yard zero and not have to dial in dope... Supper clear glass and can be found on Opticsplanet.com or more info can be found at lucidoptics.com. This optic will run you under $450. Comes with a lifetime warranty. I also have one on my 338 Lapua and with a ADM 20 MOA mount I can have a 100 yard zero and shoot 1750 yards ( 1 mile) without dialing my turrets! I would race anyone with a first focal plane optic from 100 out to 1000 and back again! This is because I wont be dialing dope.

Lucidshooter, I have the Vortex HS-T Viper which came with the rifle.  It does not have dots but rather lines/hash marks.  I am not intending to compete in 1000 yard matches but rather recreationally shoot at 200 to 500 yard steel which my range has.  I appreciate your comment as well as all others.

Once I zero my scope at 100 I will use holdover using the lines/hash marks in the reticle.  I don't plan on changing the turrets with different ammo but rather depend on holdover to shoot at different distances once I have the 100 yard zero.  Will most likely always use surplus or new NATO ball exclusively.

MOA is not more accurate. Maybe more precise.

Getting a ballistic app will help you on your holds. Not just with turrets

Woo hoo!  Someone who knows the difference between accuracy and precision.

It is one of my pet peeves when someone uses the two terms interchangeably.  Possibly because I'm a (retired) engineer and those words mean something specific to a technical person.

Sorry for the thread drift, now everyone can go back to your original topic.  ;-)

Thank you Car Ram Rod for all the info.  That ballistic app is more then I want to get involved.  Took the rifle out yesterday in a heavy wind and got it in the bulls-eye " area " at 50 & 100 yards.  Action & trigger sort of sticky and I assume its attributed to being new.  Plus I had nothing with me to rest the rifle butt on so the rifle was moving around allot.  One thing I wasn't impressed with besides the trigger was the scope.  I found it tiring trying not to get the black circles ( eye relief ) to go away.  Plus I want more than 16 power.  Oh well, live & learn....
