Opinions/Experience with 5.56 reloading W748
« on: September 29, 2018, 04:22:27 pm »
I usually use AA2230 (24gn @ 2967fps) or Ramshot X-Terminator (24.8gn @2956fps) for 5.56 reloading.  However, I currently have stock of Winchester 748, CCI 5.56 primers & Hornady 55gn FMJ's (Dillon XL650 set to seat/crimp @ 2.255 COL).  Online research says not to load beyond 26.4 grains of Win 748.

Started the following load plan for test in my Daewoo K2 (custom 18" barrel) and AR-15 (18"):
24.5gn
25gn
25.5gn
26gn

Please share your 5.56 reloading experience(s)/opinion(s) with Win 748.  I usually use Win 748 @ 45gn for 7.62X51 with M-80 (2637fps) - never used it for 5.56 before.  Trying it (see other post) in the Garand and 8mm Mauser as well.  Will share chronograph results.

I used the old Speer manual (the one with the greenish cover and picture of a bullet with shock wave) max load of W748 when I had a mini-14 a couple of decades ago. 55 grain fmjs and CCI small rifle primers. I remember it shot just fine but I did have a significant muzzle flash.

Sorry I can't remember more, but I had no issues with it.

I'm not near my data right now but I've used 748 to good effect with 55 gr bullets in my BREN 805. Good powder.

I've used W748 with 50 and 52gr bullets in 24" bolt guns. My load eventually settled out at 25.4gr, but It never really shot as accurately as I liked, and the bore tended to get a lot of carbon buildup.

I am now converted to Varget for all my .223/5.56 loads. I have standardized on 23.5-23.7gr of Varget under HDY 75gr HPBT in 1:8"/1:9" 24" barrels, and 1:7" 16" barrels. Used this load in a Savage 11VT 24" and a Stag Model 6 24" at the Berger SW LR Nationals 600yd MR F T/R in 2017.

    Still working on a 50gr and a 65gr load.

Not lookin' to be in a gunfight, but if you find yourself mixed up in one, it might be kinda nice to have a gun...

I have loaded at least 1k rounds with it and have had no issues, it goes bang when I want and not a lot of clean up after

Got some chrono results from my first W748 use with 55gn projectiles:
Federal LC 07 XM193 shot for reference:
    MIN:  2801fps
    MAX:  2849fps
    AVG:  2824fps
    STDEV:  18

24.5gn W748 Mixed headstamp with Remington Small Rifle primers:
    MIN:  2672fps
    MAX:  2777fps
    AVG:  2717fps
    STDEV:  39

25gn W748 Mixed headstamp with Remington Small Rifle primers:
    MIN:  2682fps
    MAX:  2892fps
    AVG:  2743fps
    STDEV:  74

25.5gn W748 Mixed headstamp with Remington Small Rifle primers:
    MIN:  2812fps
    MAX:  2930fps
    AVG:  2856fps
    STDEV:  31

I liked the feel of the 25.5gn load the best.  I'll post on the cleanup later.

I’ve used W748 in my 1981-vintage Colt AR since I purchased it new.  The most used loading (several 1000 ct boxes of bulk 55-grain FMJ bullets) has beed 28 grains and a standard primer.  I hunted deer on Kodiak one year with 60-grain Nosler Solid Base bullets over 27 grains, killed five deer with six shots (but never used the rifle for deer again).  Actually, after reviewing my notes I found that I’ve never used a powder other than W748 in that rifle.

I'm still working on an 8# jug of H336 from lake city pulldowns. Maybe when I eventually use this up in .308 and 5.56 I'll get around to switching, but I liked h336 prior to this jug as well. 1 hole groups at 100 yds without a sled is more accurate than I have need for with these
Heat it till it's hot, then beat it with a hammer until it's the shape you want.    Blacksmith's advice that works for pretty much everything in life
