7.92X57 Mauser Load Performance w/ IMR4064 & WIN748
« on: December 22, 2018, 03:38:10 pm »
Decided to try 8MM loads with IMR4064 and WIN748.  I ran across the IMR during the great powder shortages post-Newtown Massacre and I have an 8lb jug on WIN748.  In general, the IMR powder loads were much more "comfortable" in recoil on the low to mid end and the WIN748 minimum load started out stout.  Performance was great, typically 5 shots in a 3.5"-4" group @ 100 yards with all loads (except for IMR loads below 44gn).  The IMR 44-45gn load was most centered @100 yards, all others (WIN748 loads & IMR4064 loads above 45gn) shoot 7"-9" high - however this is typical for the German 194042 sniper variant k98.  Yeah - was lucky enough to pick up a 1940 / 42 (drill/tapped for turret mounts - bolt handle turned down in 1942 for sniper use) parts kit in the 80's (had all major components matching sans stock and a few small parts).  I completed about 15 years ago with period correct but non-matching parts.  So - it does not have all matching parts - but boy can it can shoot!

All load data below was:
Loaded on RCBS JR2 Press
Primed on RCBS primer press
Sized & Seated on RCBS FL dies
Crimped with Lee Military Crimp die
Cases Trimmed by use of RCBS trim die and extension shellholder
Primer pocket cleaned and cases chamfered & deburred on RCBS Case Prep Station
Powder charged by RCBS digital scale/dispenser.

Projectile:  Hornady 170gn Round Nose Interlock .323

Good write up.  Thanks for sharing.  :thumbup   Have you ever tried IMR 3031?  I've had good success with it loading 180 grain cast bullets in my .303 British Enfields.  It doesn't meter worth squat being a long extruded powder but dippers work pretty well with it to get you close enough to finish with a powder trickler.

I'm going to load some .303 myself soon with IMR 4064 and 4985 (just got a lb for Christmas).  I will try 3031 in the future - heard that it was meant for replacing cordite in .303.

Not sure about that but I got some good results with cast bullet loads as long as I kept the velocity down a bit.
