Ammo for Javelina
« on: November 02, 2019, 07:37:38 pm »
I have been thinking about using a 9 mm Sig Mpx for Javelina.   Has anybody got one with a 9mm or should I use a bigger caliber.  I have only shot them before with a bow.
Thanks

I hit one with a Buick once.  Afterwards it got up and ran off into the brush.  That was an accident but it shows they are pretty tough little critters so if I were using something like a 9mm I'd make damned sure my shot placement was exact.

The mildest nine that would be hot enough for javelina would be the 9x25 Dillion.

.223 is enough.  If you’re accurate.

Your mpx will be fine. Use whatever defensive 124 or 147gr 9mm ammo your gun likes the best, and have at it. I think you'll have a lot of fun zipping a pig with your mpx.

That being said, depending how comfortable you are with the mpx, you should still try to close the distance to ~40yds if you can.

If the pigs you are glassing up are particularly spooky, or the terrain makes it difficult to slip in close, you might want to fall back on 5.56 with a little magnification.

Edit: I'd roll without a weapon light (if you have one) if you are bringing out your mpx or a defensive AR. No need to chance it with game and fish.

I wouldn’t personally use a 9mm. I had a blackout last time. They can be mean and fast so I wouldn’t chance it. Run a 556 or better

Every javelin I have ever killed except one was with a bow.
The other one I killed with a 9mm.
He was locked in mortal combat with my dog.
After beating him on the head as hard as I could with my pistol for several minutes and not able to separate them , I stuck the gun against his shoulder and pulled the trigger.
    He died instantly.

    I wasn't hunting.
It was in my front yard.
I told Game and Fish all about it.
They even came and hauled off the javelin.
