GSOC Lite - Any WWW suggestions?
« on: January 09, 2020, 08:04:09 pm »
I'm not looking to build a GSOC (Global Security Operation center).  A GSOC, for the uninitiated, is a brain nucleus of information flowing in regarding world events.  Think of it like the President's Situation Room.

I'm not looking to do anything on that magnitude, but I would like to build a folder of www bookmarks that make it easier to monitor situations.  That way when something happens (like Iran starts poking holes in Iraq), I can pull up the main vein of information.

Many of my sites are wildfire related and that's probably what I need most.  Just wondering if you know of any others?

Based on the Twitter recommendations from Unpleasant, I finally signed up for Twitter.  :thumbup
I don't tweet anything but I have managed to curate a huge list of Intelligence Based Twitter Feeds.  I think I'm following about 250 different sources at this point and it is crazy amazing the amount of real first hand or close second hand news.  Things that don't make it here.

Did you know China and India walked away from peace talks?
India is holding Chinese soldiers prisoner?
Taiwan captured 6 Chinese fishing vessels and is holding about 60 fishermen hostage?

Did you know the Palestinians are split into two factions? Pro and Anti Israel?
Anti Israeli Hamas has been rocketing Israel nightly?
Israel has been strategically air striking Hamas facilities?
Pro-Israel Hamas is arresting and confiscating Anti-Israel Hamas?
Turkey, Iran, and NoKo have developed new intermediate rockets?  Capable of reaching about 1/3 of the globe from their location?

Azerbaijan and Armenia are continually skirmishing?

There's a ton of information out there that gets filtered out by mainstream media.

If you'd like to set up an information feed like this too, I'm attaching a PDF print of the sources I follow.  Or easier, you can follow me, it will show you who I follow, you can scroll through the list and follow who you want like a shopping cart, and then unfollow me because I'll never be posting up anything and I'm not looking to amass a legion of followers like the Kardasian's.  This account is purely for consuming data.

    I'm @N5MKH_Prep.

You can find most of that information - along with commentary and independent verification where it appears necessary - from a number of sources that don't line Jack Dorsey's pockets.   I never assume that the same censorship algorithms being so blatantly displayed this year in the arena of politics aren't fully operational in other areas as well.  I also never assume that any single source is always accurate and completely free of bias regardless how it presents itself.

If we had an actual, functioning press corps here instead of what passes for one these days most of what you just found would be in the news daily for most of us.  Instead, we have to dig for it because - ORANGE MAN BAD!.   :facepalm   Non U.S. based news organizations are a good place to start - particularly for the novice but a deep dive into some stuff requires a bit more specialization.

I like your idea and appreciate the list of links you provide but I have no intention of feeding the "social media" phenomenon as it currently exists.   :coffee

    Totally agree about social media.
I use to do this with some news topics and set up an RSS feed.  I just don't think anyone uses that much any more.

These days getting the world delivered to you over a phone or computer is easier than ever but it has never been a substitute for walking out the door, looking around and experiencing all the things not easily reduced to an electronic signal.  That signal has become a combination electric teat* and bedtime story for an entire generation of people who find the actual world entirely too gritty and troublesome to deal with on its own terms.  Pixelated simulations of reality are fine when you realize what they are but potentially dangerous when you don't.

    * A tip of the cap to Harlan Ellison's title "The Glass Teat" for a series of essays in the L.A. Free Press from 1968 - 1970 on the subject of television as a medium and the programming it carried at that time.

Its the slow creep, started in the late 50s and has not stopped, once into education system, it was never going to be stopped, and has put us where we are now, somewhat similar to goebels machine prior to WW2, review his plan and well, don't be surprised, its already worked in many places in the world. and its foothold here is growing, long live the free Americans, at least till i die.
