I have owned several in the past and have to say that the Russian manufactured ones always seemed a notch above the Chinese in quality and appearance.

I had a Norinco once...seemed well put together.  It hd a blade bayonet rather than the spike.  The wood was only so-so but it was a tool...not a work of art.  It had one flaw...it would shoot full-auto...even with the safety on and your finger out of the trigger guard.  Drop the bolt on the top round and it would empty the magazine sometimes...sometimes squeeze the trigger and it would empty the magazine or until you released the trigger...sometimes it worked as it was supposed to.

I got rid of it quick...sold it to a full auto dealer and let him do as he pleased with it.  I don't want a gun I can't trust.

Sounds like all you needed to do was pull the bolt and de-gunk the firing pin. Hard dry cosmoline gave them that fun surprise but at least an easy fix.

Agree the Russians SKS imho are the better made than the Chinese sks's.

Hafta agree with most comments here... I have collected SKS's for a number of years and all I have shot functioned as designed. All are reasonably accurate. The greatest variations in models are the Chinese since they made them for both the military and commercial market.

All things being equal (or reasonably equal) disregarding scarcity and price and using the fit/finish as the benchmark I would rate them as follows:
    1. East German
    2. Albanian
    3. Yugoslavian
    4. Romanian
    5. Russian
    6. Chinese
    7. North Vietnamese
    8. North Korean

    Just a side note:
A lotta truth to needsmostuff's statement on SnidelyWhiplash's post..."Sounds like all you needed to do was pull the bolt and de-gunk the firing pin. Hard dry cosmoline gave them that fun surprise but at least an easy fix." The Chinese could have packaged that cosmoline and sold it as "Improved JB Weld".

    Welcome OP!

I've had most of the above SKSs. But I'm now down to two Yugos now. (M59 & M59/66)

My Chinese SKS liked to go full auto on me,

I would get some interesting looks at the gun range.  :saywhat

To be fair, I reloaded 7.62x39 using soft primers, not a good idea with a SKS.  :facepalm

Russians and Yugos would be my pick IMHO.  ;-D

Reason I was asking was I had owned more than a few when I was younger back in the early 90s and back then we could pick them up for less than 200 bucks. Well my dumb butt sold them all thinking they would always stay around that price range. Well now that I want one for hunting they are all above 400-500 bucks. So I am going to buy one but I want one that’s good in value and quality. So thank you I appreciate all the comments and advice. Some times it’s better to hear every one’s thoughts then put that advise into the decision im making. 🙂

I had a Norinco SKS, it was inaccurate, a gritty trigger and the sear engagement was lighter than I considered safe, so down the road it went.

Russians and Yugos would be my pick IMHO.  ;-D
