An absolutely terrible picture from a failing camera.....but a mountain lion for sure walking the path behind the house.

Thought this guy had an unusual coat vs. most others I've seen. Kind of speckled. He paused there for quite awhile looking at something down our walkway.

I betting that's it. I wonder how long they live in the wild.

I think that depends on a lot of different things.  Their behavior is adaptive so that is the main factor but genetics also plays a role.  I have read that coyotes, in the wild, in their preferred natural environment, can live up to fifteen years.  Most don't make it that far for a variety of reasons so the average age is probably closer to five or six years across the whole population.

Young ones tend to get killed pretty regularly once they are weaned and out of the birthing den - especially in areas near human habitation - so that knocks the average down kind of sharply.  I read an article once that tried to contrast the life expectancy of pack members vs that of solitary animals.  It seemed clear that any animal who survived past its first year had a fifty/fifty chance of making it to five years but beyond that the data was inconclusive.

I'll just go back and look at some of the other stuff you've posted for us over the years.  Thanks for what you do.   :thumbup

Got it.   :thumbup    That looks like the same cat from earlier this month.  Nice, healthy looking specimen.  Has the rainfall in your area changed the animal behavior or numb ers you are seeing?  :hmm

All good brother - and it looks like more is on the way.  It could do this off and on until the end of the year and we'd still be in a drought.

Not my typical catch on the game camera but that was a decent sized one.
