Right...I think they are above ground now to mate.  I saw two the other day ..no camera with me naturally...that were trying to make little Gila Monsters.

lol...kind of like the toads we found in our yard in FL. Brian actually laid down on the sidewalk to take this picture...I told him to give them some privacy!  :rotfl

Why does it not surprise me that Brian took that picture?

Jerry forgive us for hijacking your thread, but a 'must' comment on this subject...

My summer day off in Florence always started with a predawn drive.. I was on a very remote graded dirt road maybe 20-30 miles west of Florence when the sun came up, and I was treated to something I've never seen, before or after..  the road was packed with tarantula's.. I really didn't want to squarsh the little guys ( NOT so little) .. like the Gila monster Jerry took that great pic of.. I've only seen one Gila monster.. and just a couple of tarantulas...NEVER seen hundreds.. I didn't even know there were that many.. turns out this is somehow related to their mating rituals.. don't think I would have believed it without seeing it for myself..

The furry spiders you mention were all about 7 years old, and off to mate for the one and only time. Once mated, the female will kill him and use the male for food for the young.

This occurs most every year, and is the annual migration around the monsoon season.

Saw this occur near tombstone one evening, years ago.

It would be cool to see that many tarantulas.  I have only encountered them singly.  I won't comment on they kill the male after sex to let their babies feed off them...too many parables to real life..lol.   Also this certainly isn't my thread it's truly our thread so you post whatever you want.

Loved the pic of the coyote on the ledge holding a "point" .  .  .  weirdest looking bird dog I've ever seen .  .  .  ;-D.   We used to see the tarantulas here around South Mountain but not so much anymore.

I still get a kick out of watching the kit foxes.   :thumbup    Sitting in my truck today with the windows down - I hear this thrumming noise and look up.  A hummingbird has flown in the passenger side window and is hovering about halfway between the passenger seatback and the dash board just giving me the eyeball.  He/she moves closer and is hovering between me and the rearview mirror - gives me the once over and zooms back out the passenger window.  Very cool.   ;-D

For those that like the Hbirds, take some time and go have lunch this spring and summer up on Mt Lemmon, at the Iron Door Mine Restaurant! Make sure you sit out on the deck, next to the rail! Just be calm, and hold your finger out straight! They're cool little birds when they sit on your finger!

    Back on topic!
